Mike Mills

Biography

Mike Mills is a part of this generation born between the folds of revolutions and of the philosophers of difference. An artist, graphic designer, producer of documentaries, of fictions, of his own fabrics and posters, advertisements, album covers and numerous films. Mills wrote and directed the feature film Thumbsucker (2005), which won awards at both the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. His second feature, Beginners (2011), won Best Film and Best Ensemble Cast at the Gotham Awards and was nominated for best director, best screenplay, and best supporting actor by the Independent Spirit Awards. Christopher Plummer won the Oscar for best supporting actor (2012). In 2016 Mills wrote and directed 20th Century Women where he was nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay. As a graphic artist, Mills has designed album covers for Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, and Air among others. During the mid-1990’s, Mills was responsible for all graphic design for Kim Gordon’s (Sonic Youth) iconic clothing company X-Girl. Mike Mills was interviewed in Los Angeles, CA on June 11, 2005.
